It gives this park a fun, distinctly Colorado feel that makes even a simple afternoon outside feel like an adventure.”

Why You’ll Love This Park

Foothills Community Park packs a surprising amount into its 65-plus acres. Kids can explore the playground and nature-play features, while families can enjoy picnic shelters, sports fields, basketball, pickleball, inline hockey, walking paths, and plenty of room to spread out. There is also a fenced dog park, nearby open-space trail access, and RTD public transit service nearby, making the park easier to reach without a car.

What really gives this park its own personality, though, is the setting. Watching paragliders drift down from the foothills while cattle graze nearby creates a fun, distinctly Colorado backdrop that makes Foothills Community Park feel like more than just another city park.

Playground & Nature Play

Climb, Play & Explore. Let the kids burn off some energy on the playground and discover the park’s nature-inspired play features. Foothills offers plenty of opportunities for climbing, exploring, imaginative play, and outdoor fun.

Pickleball

Grab Your Paddles. Foothills Community Park has courts striped for pickleball, making it a great place to get in a few games while enjoying the mountain views. Bring your paddles, balls, and a portable net.

Inline Hockey

Lace Up & Hit the Rink. The park’s inline hockey rink adds something you do not find at every neighborhood park. Bring your skates and sticks for some practice, a pickup game, or just a chance to skate around.

Basketball

Shoot Some Hoops. Bring a basketball and work on your shot, play a quick game of HORSE, or gather some friends for a casual game on the park’s basketball court.

Walk, Run & Explore

Stretch Your Legs. Follow the multi-use paths through the park for an easy walk, jog, or family outing. The park also connects naturally with the surrounding foothills setting and nearby open-space trail opportunities.

Watch the Paragliders

Keep an Eye on the Sky. One of the most memorable parts of visiting Foothills Community Park can be watching paragliders float down from the nearby mountains. Add cattle grazing in the surrounding landscape, and you get a fun Colorado scene you will not find at many city parks.

Dog Park

Let Your Four-Legged Explorer Run. Foothills Community Park includes a dedicated fenced dog park where dogs can enjoy some off-leash time. Outside the designated dog park, follow Boulder’s posted leash rules.

Soccer & Open Fields

Bring a Ball & Spread Out. Large grassy areas and multi-use fields give you plenty of room for soccer, frisbee, catch, informal games, or simply letting the kids run.

Picnic & Gather

Pack Lunch & Stay Awhile. With picnic areas, covered shelters, and plenty of open space, Foothills is a great spot for a family picnic, birthday gathering, or an easy afternoon outside.

Sledding

Come Back When the Snow Flies. When winter covers the grassy hills with snow, Foothills becomes another kind of playground. Bring the sleds and take advantage of the park’s open slopes for some classic Colorado winter fun.

Reservations: Three picnic shelters are available for reservation. Sports fields and pickleball courts may also be reserved through Boulder Parks & Recreation. Shelter Reservation Information

Hours / Seasonal Notes: Park hours are 5 AM – 11 PM. Restrooms are open year-round, although hours are limited during fall and winter. Sledding is permitted on grassy areas when conditions allow.

Best Times to Visit

Quieter Times: Weekday mornings and early afternoons are usually your best bet for a more relaxed playground visit, walk, or picnic. If you want to explore the park without as much sports and group activity around you, aim for a weekday when the fields and shelters are less likely to be in use.

Busier Times: Expect more activity on weekends and when sports fields or picnic shelters are reserved. The playground, dog park, athletic fields, and courts can bring several different groups to the park at the same time, especially on pleasant-weather days.

Fred’s Tip: If pickleball is part of your plan, come in the morning. Foothills’ pickleball courts are available for pickleball from 7 AM to noon, and you’ll need to bring a portable net. After noon, the rink returns to general public use and other sports. For a laid-back visit, bring a picnic, explore the paths, and keep an eye toward the foothills — you may even catch paragliders floating down from the mountains.
